Denham Springs man sentenced for child pornography

DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB)- A Denham Springs man took his computer to a repair shop and technicians found more than a virus on his hard drive. They found x-rated pictures of a little girl.

Monday, the owner of the computer, Joseph Scherer, 32, was sentenced to two years at the Livingston Parish Detention Center. Scherer pled no contest to Pornography Involving a Juvenile.

While that isn't an admission of guilt, he is not fighting the charge either. Neighbors who live on the same street as Scherer say they want to know if their children are safe once the man is released.

"We told our children about him, not to speak to him. Make sure to have no contact with him," said Nikki Carpenter, who lives at the end of the street where Scherer also lives.

Carpenter says she was not concerned with her neighbor, until police showed up at his home last year.

Man charged with DWI after crashing boat into DWLF boat

FRENCH SETTLEMENT, LA (WAFB)- A St. Amant man is facing DWI charges after a boat crash involving a Department of Wildlife and Fisheries boat.

Witnesses say Gary Miller, 43, was driving his boat at a high rate of speed on the Amite River on May 6th when he smashed into a LDWF patrol vessel, badly damaging Miller's boat.

A blood test revealed that Miller's blood alcohol level was over the legal limit.

Miller has been charged with third offense DWI, reckless operation of a vessel and operating a watercraft while under a driver's license suspension.

Southeastern could lose $16.5 million in state cuts

Southeastern could lose $16.5 million in state cuts

HAMMOND – If the budget bill (HB1) currently moving through the Louisiana Legislature is not amended, Southeastern Louisiana University is slated to lose $16.5 million in state appropriations.
This will bring Southeastern’s total state funding reductions since Fiscal Year 2008/09 to $45.6 million, or 58 percent. As the current budget proposal stands, total reductions in state general fund support for all of higher education since FY 2008/09 would reach $585 million.
“Over the past four years, we have absorbed significant reductions in our state support, and greatly streamlined our operations as a result,” said President John L. Crain.  “A reduction of this size, particularly given the magnitude of reductions already absorbed, would have a cataclysmic impact on the university and would drastically impair our ability to serve our students and communities.”
